It is likely that the demand for biochar will continue to grow in the further. So, let Beston Group help you to start a successful biochar making project right now!
What Is Biochar Pyrolysis?
Biochar pyrolysis is a process of heating organic materials, such as wood, crop residues, or animal waste, in the absence of oxygen to produce a carbon-rich solid material known as biochar. Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition process that breaks down complex organic molecules into simpler ones, leaving behind a solid residue that is enriched in carbon and other nutrients.
The process involves heating the organic material to a temperature between 450-600℃ in a specially designed chamber called a furnace. During the pyrolysis process, the organic material is converted into biochar, along with other byproducts such as syngas and bio-oil.
Biochar pyrolysis is an important technology that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by sequestering carbon in the soil, enhancing agricultural productivity, and providing sustainable waste management solutions.
What Raw Materials Can Be Pyrolyzed To Make Biochar?
Biochar can be produced from a variety of raw materials through pyrolysis. Some examples of raw materials that can be used to produce biochar through pyrolysis include:
- Agricultural waste: such as corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, wheat straw, rice husks, peanut shells, coffee husks, fruit husks, hazelnut husks, olive shells, jute sticks, sunflower stem, peach pit…
- Forestry waste: such as wood chips, sawdust, bamboo, and bark,
- Sewage sludge: municipal sludge, river sludge, industrial sludge;
- Animal waste: such as poultry litter, swine manure, cattle manure, and pig hair.
- Municipal domestic waste
What Are The Applications Of Biochar?
Biochar is a form of charcoal produced by pyrolysis, the process of heating organic materials in the absence of oxygen. It has been used for thousands of years as a soil amendment, particularly in the Amazon Basin, where it was used by indigenous communities to improve soil fertility and increase crop yields. In recent years, biochar has gained renewed attention as a tool for carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. However, its applications go beyond agriculture and climate change, and include a range of other fields. Find them here:
Soil Amendment
One of the most well-known applications of biochar is as a soil amendment. Biochar has been shown to improve soil fertility, water retention, and nutrient cycling. It can also reduce soil acidity, increase pH, and improve soil structure. These benefits can lead to increased crop yields, reduced need for fertilizer and water, and improved soil health. Biochar can be applied to soils in various ways, including as a top dressing, mixed into the soil, or incorporated into compost.
Fuel For BBQ/Cooking/Heating
Biochar can be produced from a range of biomass feedstocks, including wood chips, agricultural residues, sewage sludge, and even municipal solid waste. During pyrolysis, the biomass raw materials can be pyrolysis into biochar. At the same time, a range of biogases is also produced. These gases can be captured and used for energy production, either for heat or electricity. The resulting biochar can also be used as a fuel for BBQ, cooking, and heating.
Biochar is a versatile material with a range of applications. Its ability to improve soil fertility, store carbon, and filter water make it an attractive tool for sustainable agriculture, climate change mitigation, and environmental remediation. As interest in biochar continues to grow, it is likely that new applications will be discovered, making it an important tool for building a sustainable future.

Working Process Of Biochar Pyrolysis Equipment
Pretreatment: For large-sized raw materials, they are needed to be shredded to less than 2cm by a crusher. For high-moisture raw materials, they are needed to be dried. The moisture should be less than 15%. If the raw materials have suitable size and moisture, pretreatment is not needed.
Pre-heating: Use fuel, LPG, natural gas, or diesel to preheat the furnace. Also, the recycled biogas produced in the biochar production process also can be used for preheating.
Biochar pyrolysis: The processed raw materials will be transported to the furnace. The temperature for automatic biochar pyrolysis is generally 380℃-450℃. The temperature in the furnace is about 450℃-600℃. The temperature for the batch biochar pyrolysis is generally 280℃-450℃. The temperature in the furnace is about 450℃-500℃. It takes about 20 minutes to get biochar in the absence of oxygen and high-temperature condition. Finally, after water cooling, the biochar will be discharged by an auto screw discharger.
